MEGA SAFARI TO TANZANIA - 11 Days

This thrilling overland camping Safari starts in Nairobi, Kenya and ends in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Upon departure from Nairobi we head south across the Tanzanian Namanga border to Arusha, a gateway to the top game parks on the Northern Safari Circuit area. We take a three-day wondrous wildlife safari into two of East Africa’s top safari destinations – world famous and iconic Serengeti Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, home to Africa’s Big Five and numerous other wild animals.

Then we head southwards to Dar es Salaam on the Tanzanian Coast. From here we take a ferry across to the Island of Zanzibar and spend a few days exploring this fascinating tropical island with its rich Arabic-African culture and white sand beaches.

The fantastic wildlife and beaches African Camping Safari ends on arrival back in Dar es Salaam.

Day 1
Nairobi, Kenya

Welcome to Kenya, the original home of the African safari!

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or your bus stop, you are collected and transferred to your first overnight hotel in Nairobi. The rest of the day is free for you to relax at the hotel or explore the bustling mega-city of Nairobi, Kenya’s political and economic capital.

Day 2
Nairobi to Arusha – Tanzania

This tour to the Northern Tanzania Circuit starts from Nairobi in Kenya, travelling south into Tanzania via the Namanga border post.

On the first day’s night you will stay at a lovely safari camp/lodge in Meserani, just outside of Arusha. On day two we will be embarking on a Serengeti Park and Ngorongoro Crater Trip in search for lions, chettaahs, leopards and crocodiles alongside other site viewing activities.

Day 3
Arusha to Karatu – Tanzania

Arusha, which is located at the foot of Mount Meru serves as the gateway for safaris to Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara Park and the Serengeti Park.

Begin with morning exploration of Arusha town if you like, viewing the beautiful craft markets, shopping or stopping in at the art gallery to see the brightly coloured Tinga Tinga paintings typical of Tanzania. Visit the interesting Masai Cultural Museum to learn about their way of life. Later on, visit the Meserani Snake Park to see the snakes and other reptiles up close (for those who are not scared of snakes).

Head back to the base camp at Meserani for lunch and prepare for Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park Trip. In the afternoon you are driven to Karatu via the Maasai town of Mtu Wa Mbu located next to Lake Manyara National Park. The tour guides lead you up the Great Rift Valley Escarpment to Karatu, located in the Crater Highlands, as you ejnoy breathtaking views of the surrounding beautiful scenery.

Have dinner and overnight at Karatu, departing early the following morning for the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 4
Ngorongoro Crater & Serengeti Trip – Tanzania

After breakfast, you will be driven to the Ngorongoro Crater, a site that offers the best game viewing in Africa. More so, it is one of the highest wildlife concentration area in Africa.

Tour around the Crater floor viewing the diverse habitats, catching sight of an abundance of Africa’s wild animals and birds. After spotting an impressive collection of creatures in this wildlife haven, we climb back out of the crater and down the outer rim, passing the ‘Cradle of Mankind’ en route to the Serengeti National Park.

We cross the open African plains on our game drive through the southern areas of the Serengeti Park. Here, you’ll view the wild beasts and other varieties of wildlife. We shall camp here. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5
Serengeti National Park to Arusha – Tanzania

After breakfast we take a thrilling game drive in Serengeti Park, admiring the beautiful landscapes as we search for the Big Five of Africa (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) and, other wild animals and birds.

Cross the open plains back to Arusha for lunch and spend spend the evening recounting our exhilarating tales of the wildlife encounters experienced on the plains of Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 6
Arusha to Pangani – Tanzania

After breakfast we drive south towards Dar es Salaam, on the coast of Tanzania.

We stop in Moshi, a town at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain and serves as the base for Mount Kilimanjaro climbing expeditions. This gives you a chance to view clearly the magnificent mountain’s snow-dusted summit from the town. The views of towering Kilimanjaro from Moshi offer fantastic photo opportunities!

Passing through vast sisal plantations flanked by the Usambara and Pare Mountain ranges we continue south on our safari adventure. Our pleasant overnight campsite is tucked away in the mountains, halfway between Arusha and Dar es Salaam. Dinner and overnight.

Day 7
Pangani to Dar es Salaam – Tanzania

Travelling through lush countryside landscapes with palm trees, we make our way to the next safari destination, Dar es Salaam.

The pace of our drive to the warm Indian Ocean slows as we enter the outskirts of busy Dar es Salaam, taking in the interesting sights and sounds of Dar’s vibrant outer suburbs as we go. Keep an eye out for the brightly coloured shop-fronts decorated with humorous names and slogans.

Arriving in Dar es Salaam on the East Coast of Africa we head to our fantastic seaside campsite and have time to prepare for our trip to Zanzibar Island the following morning.

Day 8
Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Islands

On day eight of this Northern Safari Circuit to Zanzibar Overland Camping Tour, we catch a ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar, where we spend three nights.

Zanzibar has a colourful past, as one of the major Adeparture points for European explorations into new territories of East Africa, in times gone by. This tropical island was once an important link in the spice and slave trade route between east and west.

Please Note:

On Zanzibar Island, meal and extra activity expenses are not included in the tour price. The safari guide accompanies the tour group to the main island and is there to assist you with activity and meal arrangements. Zanzibar is one of Africa’s top beach destinations and as such features an array of restaurants and activities.

Day 9
Zanzibar Island – Tanzania (Day 9 and 10 in Zanzibar)

The Zanzibar Islands are known as the ‘Spice Islands’ due to the aromatic spices that are grown here. We take a spice plantation tour to smell, see and taste the colourful spices, from cloves and nutmeg to cinnamon and pepper. Take a walk through the old Stone Town to see the strong Arabic influences in Medina shopfronts, old palaces and mosques. Zanzibar is a culturally diverse and historically interesting destination, as well as being a superb beach getaway.

Spend blissful hours on the white-sand, palm-fringed beaches, swimming in the warm Indian Ocean, sipping on cocktails and eating fresh seafood. Zanzibar is also one of Africa’s top scuba diving destinations, with options including day trips to smaller islands like Nungwe. Traditional dhow sailing trips are a unique way of exploring the islands and visiting the pristine Prison Island to see giant tortoises.

Our safari also includes a dhow sunset cruise in a traditional East African sailing vessel.

Day 10
Zanzibar Island – Tanzania (Day 9 and 10 in Zanzibar)

Day 11
Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam – Tanzania

Departing from the tropical Zanzibar Island in the afternoon, our idyllic African beach trip comes to a close. We return to the shores of Tanzania feeling sun-kissed, rejuvenated and relaxed.

This magical Northern Safari Circuit to Zanzibar comes to an end back in Dar es Salaam town.

This Budget Camping Safari departs from Nairobi in Kenya early on day two. Should you wish to explore Nairobi, an earlier arrival is recommended. Pre-tour accommodation can be booked through African Budget Safaris.
